      I will definitely have to pick up that book (or make a pair of tie-able shoes with two-tone laces). I really think you're right that velcro has delayed the shoe-tying skill. I'm embarrassed to admit my 7 year old son still can't do it. Up until a few months ago, he'd always chosen sneakers with velcro, and just got his first pair with laces in.
